Discover the joy of crazy patchwork in this relaxed and creative full-day workshop at Patchwork Dreamer in Bodmin, Cornwall, led by experienced tutor Helen Clemo.

Crazy patchwork has its roots in the Victorian era, where it was used to showcase decorative stitching and treasured fabric scraps. Today, it remains a wonderfully expressive and sustainable quilting technique — perfect for using those beautiful bits of fabric you just can’t throw away.

With Helen’s guidance, you’ll explore this creative style in a supportive and friendly setting, learning techniques you can continue to use long after the class.

What you’ll learn

• Two core crazy patchwork techniques
• How to build a balanced and visually interesting patchwork panel
• Tips for working with fabric scraps and colour combinations
• How to develop your design into a finished project

Your finished project

In the afternoon, you’ll use your patchwork panel to create something practical and personal. Ideas include:

• Cushion cover
• Small drawstring or zip bag
• Book or diary cover

What to bring

• Sewing machine (in good working order) + manual
• General sewing kit (scissors, pins, needles, thread, tape measure, fabric marker)
• Optional: rotary cutter & mat

Materials required

• A variety of fabric off-cuts (approx. equivalent to 4 fat quarters)
• ¼ metre medium-weight iron-on interfacing
• ¼ metre medium-weight plain fabric (e.g. polycotton lining)

Optional extras

• Braid or ribbon
• Contrasting threads
• Zip or drawstring
• Additional lining or backing fabric

You’re very welcome to bring fabrics you love — this is a great opportunity to use those special pieces you’ve been saving.
