Description

Easy-to-Sew Woven Top Workshop

Choose an easy-to-sew woven top pattern and spend the day learning how to make a garment that fits you comfortably.

During this practical, hands-on workshop, you will work through the preparation, fitting, cutting and construction of your chosen top, with guidance throughout the day.

You Will Learn

  • How to fold and prepare your fabric correctly
  • How to alter your pattern to improve the fit
  • How to lay out and cut your pattern pieces
  • How to follow your pattern instructions
  • The sewing processes and techniques needed to complete your top

Choosing Your Pattern

Please choose a simple top pattern designed for woven fabric.

Your chosen pattern:

  • Must have sleeves or armhole facings
  • Must have a neck facing or binding
  • Must not have a collar
  • Should be suitable for your current sewing ability

Suitable pattern examples include:

  • Simplicity 8061
  • New Look K6434
  • New Look 6483
  • Burda 6525
  • Vogue V8877
  • Butterick B6214

These are examples only, and you are welcome to choose a different pattern that meets the workshop requirements.

Please contact us before the class if you are unsure whether your chosen pattern is suitable.

Choosing Your Fabric

Cotton fabric will be the easiest option to work with, followed by a polycotton blend.

Please avoid fabrics that are very slippery, stretchy or difficult to handle, particularly if this is your first time making a garment.

Wash, dry and press your fabric before the workshop, as some woven fabrics may shrink.

Please Bring

  • Your chosen woven top pattern in the correct size range
  • All the fabric needed to make your chosen size
  • Any interfacing, binding, fastenings or other materials listed on the pattern
  • Matching sewing thread
  • Your sewing machine, foot pedal and power cable
  • Your sewing machine instruction manual
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pins or sewing clips
  • Tape measure
  • Seam ripper
  • Marking tools
  • A basic sewing kit
  • Notebook and pen
  • Dressmaker’s pencil/tailor’s chalk
  • Carbon paper and tracing wheel, if you have one.

The fabric quantity and additional materials needed will be listed on the back of the pattern packet or within the instruction sheet. Please check this information carefully and bring everything required to make your chosen size.

Lunch and Refreshments

Please bring a packed lunch. There is also a café nearby if you would prefer to purchase lunch.

Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day.

Skill Level

Suitable for confident beginners who can set up and use their own sewing machine.
